Loop Detector Faults and What Causes Them

What the Loop Does

A loop detector is a coil of wire in a saw cut, energised by a card in the operator cabinet. A vehicle over it changes the inductance and the card signals the operator. Testing Without Digging

Most cards show a frequency readout and a fault light. Read the frequency with nothing over the loop, then with a vehicle on it, and note whether it moves. A card reporting an open circuit with a steady light usually has a broken lead in the last few feet, not a failed loop. Swapping the exit and safety leads at the card tells you in a minute whether the problem follows the wire or stays with the channel.

How Water Gets In

The Lead In Is the Weak Point

Sensitivity Is Not a Repair

Turning sensitivity up masks a deteriorating loop and makes false triggers likelier, which then shows up as a gate that opens at nothing. Set it once against a real vehicle and treat any later need to raise it as evidence that something physical has changed. The same discipline applies to a keypad or an intercom that has started needing a second press.
